FODMAP Pioneers

The team of gastroenterologists, registered dietitian nutritionists and researchers in the Department of Gastroenterology team at Monash University successfully developed a cutting edge dietary nutrition intervention shown to reduce the symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Led by Professor Peter Gibson, MD, Department Head, and Associate Professor Jane Muir, PHD, Head of Translational Nutrition Science, Monash University was the first to:

  • Classify those foods high in FODMAPs that can trigger IBS symptoms
  • Build a comprehensive database of amounts and types of FODMAPs in foods, including foods and beverages low in FODMAPs
  • Develop and trial the Low FODMAP Diet for efficacy in patients with IBS
  • Publish high-quality, peer-reviewed research demonstrating a Low FODMAP Diet is effective as first-line dietary treatment option for IBS

Monash University Low FODMAP Diet App

As the comprehensive Low FODMAP Diet database was available, the research team at Monash University developed a low FODMAP smart phone application to help users identify low FODMAP-safe foods – and even customize the “safety” levels to their individual food sensitivities -- right at their fingertips.





The Monash University Low FODMAP Food and Recipe Certification Programs

In 2015, the Monash University Low FODMAP Certification Program was launched in Australia. Certified products all undergo rigorous FODMAP testing in laboratories run by the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash. In addition, Monash University also provides a recipe certification program .
